Mrs. McCullouh entertains in her story set in Northern Alberta durring the fascinating era of rugged individuals, recovery from poverty, and uniquely interesting lives. From The Foreword In looking back over my experience with Adult Education and Community Development in isolated Northern Alberta Communities, I have realized that Wayne McCullough was my primary mentor and model for developing a caring and respectful relationship with the Metis inhabitants of the "bush" communities. He accompanied me and introduced me to the first communities I worked in as a professional. Wayne was a quiet man who never seemed to get excited or be in a hurry, he had a twinkle in his eye and laughed easily and often. Wayne led an adventuresome life as a young man, and he had the air of confidence and competence about him, that was to be expected in a man who had tested himself to the limits. Wayne spoke softly and sincerely and was able to gain trust from those who had reason not to trust. Wayne was as good as his word and never made promises he couldn’t keep. When I think of Wayne and my experience of him as my mentor, role model, colleague and friend, I am struck by the quality of relationships he established with all whom he interacted. Wayne possessed a unique ability and willingness to bring a warm and authentic personal presence to all his interactions regardless of the issues involved. I believe it was this special gift of Wayne’s — to enable people to feel respected and cared about — that endeared him to all that knew him, and made him so effective as problem solver, mediator and advocate throughout his long and dedicated years of service to the Metis people in Alberta.
