Part I

By the time I reached my mid-thirties, my life was a mess. I had already been married and divorced, and had suffered the trauma of multiple abortions. Without being aware of it, I was suffering from postabortion syndrome: depression, anger, suicidal thoughts, and inability to form healthy, enduring relationships. I also experienced a terrible grieving around the ‘anniversary’ dates of the abortions, and a neurotic compulsion to become pregnant again, as if to somehow ‘make up’ for the babies I had lost.

As a modern, ‘pro-choice’, university-educated woman, however, I dismissed all these symptoms as just ‘part of life’, and consoled myself with the notion that I had done the only ‘sensible’ thing, in performing a ‘simple’ procedure to get rid of unwanted pregnancies. I had to just ‘get on with my life’, as people often advised me. But somehow, I just couldn’t ‘get with the program’. I felt like I was going to come apart at the seams. Spiritually, I wanted no part of religion. I had grown up in an Orthodox Jewish home and considered this a dead religion of man-made rules, lies and hypocrisy.
